Palazzo Salis in Tirano is one of the most important palazzi in Valtellina. The basic structure consists of a façade from late 1500s, flanked by two towers, with a central baroque portal designed by Vignola, the great Italian Mannerist architect. From the entrance, we pass through a portico to enter the beautiful Italian-style interior garden, one of the most important gardens in Lombardy, and certainly the greatest example in Valtellina of a noble garden. Of particular interest within the palazzo are the Grand Staircase, the Great Hall, and the so-called “Saloncello” (the Reading Hall).
Palazzo Salis has always belonged to the Salis family, who have restored it over the centuries. Some of the Salis wines are named for parts of the palazzo, such as “Saloncello”, “Corte della Meridiana” (the Sundial Court), “Torre della Sirena” (the Mermaid Tower) and the “Capo di Terra” (Top of the World). The spring of 2007 will see the opening of an important family museum in the palazzo (see Guided Tours)
